An Update on CELEOS, LASTING Software’s Satellite Channel Emulator
We are happy to share an update on one of the main projects LASTING Software has been developing in recent years – namely, our multi-orbit satellite channel emulator CELEOS. In the rapidly evolving world of satellite communication, CELEOS redefines and simplifies the way satellite communications are tested and validated. By strategically making use of Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology, CELEOS offers a solid set of capabilities at an accessible price point, addressing the balance between performance, portability and cost.
How CELEOS Works
The architecture of CELEOS uses an SDR to perform analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion of RF signals and off-the-shelf GPUs for signal processing. The software is hardware-agnostic, functioning with a range of SDRs and GPUs. Two configurations vary in terms of hardware (SDR and GPU models) and thus in the number of supported channels and their bandwidth, but both use the same software.
CELEOS integrates advanced SDR with GPU technology for parallel processing, offering a high-performing, versatile tool optimized for 5G, NB-IoT and native satellite waveforms.
Some Unique Advantages for Industry Players
CELEOS addresses the satellite communications sector's challenges of high costs, bulky equipment and the lack of versatile testing environments. Essentially, CELEOS combines portability and compactness without sacrificing functionality.
By making advanced satellite communication testing both accessible and practical, CELEOS is relevant to a number of strategic industry stakeholders. Designed for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Satellite Network Operators (SNOs), research and development centres and academics, CELEOS enhances satellite communication capabilities, optimizes network performance and advances satellite technology research.
In a market populated by established companies, CELEOS differentiates itself with a cost-effective approach and specialized features for satellite communications. It combines affordability with high-performance emulation in a portable package.
Versatile Use Cases
CELEOS supports TLE synchronization and accommodates inputs from diverse waveforms, excelling across applications from 5G conditional handovers to inter-satellite LEO handovers. It enables testing scenarios that pave the way for innovation in satellite communications.
LASTING Software aims to democratize access to superior satellite communication testing with CELEOS. By leveraging SDR and GPU technologies, CELEOS delivers an economical yet powerful emulator supporting multi-orbit constellations while maintaining portability and compactness. Capable of emulating all relevant satellite channel impairments, CELEOS sets a new standard in the field, ensuring communications are robust, reliable and future-ready.
Strategic Alliances for LASTING Software to Support CELEOS & the Way Forward
In April 2024, LASTING Software has become an associate member of the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance (OSA). This strategic alignment fosters the development of advanced Radio Access Network (RAN) and Core Network (CN) technologies, amplifying our capabilities to address 5G NTN and satellite communications. The partnership enables us to deliver high-quality integrated telecommunications solutions, ensuring CELEOS stays highly competitive.
In May 2024, LASTING Software has also joined the Digital Intermediate Frequency Interoperability (DIFI) Consortium. This strategic move accelerates digital transformation in the space, satellite and related sectors by advocating for and adopting a standardized digital IF/RF interface. By joining the DIFI Consortium, LASTING Software will incorporate DIFI functionality into CELEOS, allowing it to function as both a DIFI-to-RF and RF-to-DIFI converter, further enhancing CELEOS's versatility and value.
Recent Milestones and Strategic Partnerships
(1) Formal Closure of the Prototyping Phase (April 2024)
In April 2024, LASTING Software formally closed the prototyping phase of CELEOS, marking a significant step toward revolutionizing the satellite communication testing landscape.
(2) Intermediate Review for Flex Space (April 2024)
An intermediate review was conducted for Flex Space, LASTING Software's direct-to-device testbed and on-board processing solution for 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks). This review confirmed CELEOS’s reliability as a low-cost, SDR-based channel emulator for LEO and MEO satellite constellations.
Commercial Viability and June 2024 Launch
